Lavender Essential Oil Helps Our Baby Sleep through the Night and Cures Ringworm
We Have Learned to Use Pure Lavender Oil to Help Little Ones Sleep Better, to Heal Skin Irritations, and to Help Relax Before Bed.
In the Spring of 2011, we were introduced to essential oils from a friend. Since then, we have learned that there are different grades on the market and they are clearly not all equal. And, although we did not have the budget to buy a bunch of these different essential oils that we discovered, we have continued to buy a few of them, including Lavender because of all of it's natural calming and healing abilities.
Our then 16 month old baby was having a hard time sleeping through the night, and it was difficult to get her to settle down before bed. She has no known allergies and her diet and activities were normal for a baby her age, and we are against using pharmaceuticals whenever possible.
Our friend told us to put a few drops of therapeutic grade Lavender oil on our hands 10 minutes before her bedtime and allow her to smell it while getting her ready for bed. For such a small body, it did not take much to see the obvious calming effects it had on her. To our excitement, she began sleeping much better through the night, and so did we!
We later learned that you could rub a few drops on her feet, and we even put a few drops on her plush stuffed rabbit that she cuddles with at night. Additionally, we bought a sweet little bedtime CD to play calming, instrumental music for 10 to 15 minutes every night To this day (she is now 26 months old), she looks forward to our little bed-time ritual. When we turn the lights down in the living room, and start the CD of soft children's music, she goes to the couch and lays down as she knows it is time. She will even sometimes grab her little plush bunnies and say “nigh nigh” as a signal that she knows it is time to get ready for bed.
Currently, we will rub a few drops on our hands and rub a little on her forehead, a bit on the tip of her nose, and some on the palms of her hands and feet and she loves it. She even reaches for more and wants us to put more on her hands. After the first few drops, I put the cap back on the bottle and “fake it” a little because she keeps wanting us to dab more and more of it on her hands. Though it would not be bad to put more on her hands, it is not necessary to give her more than a few drops on her hands, feet, and a little more to rub on her forehead and a tad bit on the tip of her nose.
Over the past few years, I have had increasing difficulties with sleep apnea and restlessness as well and have had some medical treatment for it yet the Doctor's help has not completely solved the issue. I started trying the Lavender as I thought it was all natural and it helped the baby, so perhaps it could help me. When I remember, I use Lavender and another oil blend called “Peace and Calming” to help me get into a more relaxed physical and mental state before bed. My sleep is always better when I remember to use these 2 oils and I wake up a bit earlier and more refreshed the next day. Sometimes I forget to use the oil because I am very tired when I go to bed, but then I do not always get a full-night's sleep just because I go to bed very tired. The oils always help me get a better nights sleep and it has been a small price to pay for better sleep, more energy the next day and a better quality of life and productivity with work.
Once we tried Lavender to help our baby sleep better, we realized we were on to something natural, safe and effective. We had also been reading a lot about toxicity and processed foods in industrialized countries like the U.S. and have been working on eating more raw and natural fruits and vegetables, and have cut off most processed foods.
With this new-found learning and information, Jen and I had continued studying about the benefits of natural oils for other ailments. One time, our little Joy got some kind of circular rash on her belly that resembled ring-worm. I am fairly certain it was some kind of
ring worm infection. We decided to rub some Lavender on it. A few drops and 2 to 3 days later, it had completely cleared up! We were able to clear up her rash in just 3 days without a visit to the doctor and without some complex pharmaceutical topical solution that was more of a mystery and less natural for our baby.
I have also used Lavender oil to gently clear up blemishes on my nose. I would have thought that at the age of 37, I would have lost my issues with acne, but not true. Lavender has proven to be a great aid for many ailments, and has been very gentle on healing skin irritations and rashes for our kids and us, without the concern of any long-term pharmaceutical toxicity to us or our kids.
Jen had been experiencing some GERD over the past few years, mostly onset during her pregnancies. After months of using over-the-counter antacids, she was ready for another natural remedy. During a few flare ups, I asked her to try the therapeutic-grade Lavender Oil because it was safe to digest in small amounts. She tried a few drops on her tongue and in a few minutes, the acid irritation and the spasms in her throat had diminished greatly. It seemed to have a calming effect on the involuntary smooth muscles of her throat and had also reduced the burning from the acid reflux.
Pharmaceuticals come from natural chemicals that have been manipulated by chemists
I have a background (degrees) in the sciences, and I have taught different science courses at the high school and college level. Over my life learning in the sciences, I had read that many pharmaceuticals (man made medicines) started from natural plant oils and other phyto-chemicals, and had been manipulated in pharmaceutical labs to isolate benefits, as well as for “patent-rights”. The multi-trillion dollar pharmaceutical industry would not be able to be so “rich” if it were not for the ability to create or manipulate chemicals and create medicines that were able to be patented. It's the way the medical and pharmaceutical industries have evolved into a giant economic machine.
Yet, for many millenia, cultures have used natural plants, plant oils, leaves and other natural remedies that have been just as effective as pharmaceuticals, without the side-effects. Though modern medicine has made some advancements in the treatments of many diseases, they have not surpassed natural medicines in many other areas and in fact have been arguably more toxic with less than ideal benefits. So for our family, we do seek the advice of doctors for vaccines, stitches and other things which cannot be provided by natural essential oils and other natural remedies. However, whenever possible, we seek and research for a natural remedy before we jump in the car to get a script for a man-made pill when it is not completely necessary.
You can read more about other uses for Lavender oil on another one of our research articles here: 50 Uses for Lavender Oil. You can also buy 100% pure therapeutic-grade Lavender oil that can be inhaled, applied topically, or ingested. Not all essential oils are created equally. We recommend using only 100% Pure Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Grade Lavender Oil because of its purity and their dedication to excellence and organic methods.
If you would like to buy Lavender oil that is in its purest form, we recommend 100% Therapeutic or Pharmaceutical Grade essential oils over other lower grades and those found in stores. Also, it is highly concentrated so where other brands require much more oil to achieve similar results, and most are not able to be ingested (taken internally), find Lavender oil that is 100% pure and only a few drops will go a long way.
